WHY DO WE NEED FUEL INJECTORS?

The purpose of the fuel injection system is to deliver fuel into the engine cylinders, while precisely controlling the injection timing, fuel atomisation, and other parameters. Injectors are highly intricate pieces of equipment and have a tolerance of 1 micron, the finest tolerance of any mechanical component on the engine.  If you would like to know how things work, check out THIS video that explains the diesel common rail injector, and what it does.

WHAT CAUSES FUEL INJECTOR FAILURE?

Diesel injectors generally fail because of two main reasons. The first has to do with the mechanical soundness of the injector structure.  The second has to do with the quality of the fuel running through the injector.  The quality of fuel is often compromised because of contamination from water. If fuel is not stored or handled correctly, water can enter the fuel and will react with the chemicals in it to corrode metal surfaces and reduce lubrication between the moving parts.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FAILING FUEL INJECTORS

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, please head to your mechanic.  There is nothing worse than repairing a fault to find the vehicle still has the same issues.  We cannot emphasise enough the importance of getting a proper diagnosis before replacing parts.

  1. Loss of Power
  2. Poor Fuel Efficiency
  3. Engine Misfire
  4. Excessive Exhaust Smoke and Fuel Smell
